How is your role in government different from an elected official?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Our role, as in the role of the common people, is to vote for a representative. We vote for the elected official because we're basically saying the majority of the country believes that person will be a better representative. The representative's role is to then act on what the people say. The people of the country are to state the issues going on in their community or the entire country. For example, we can write a letter to the president saying he should change our health care system. Us writing the letter and voting for him/her is our role that we play. That's the people's power. The president, or whoever, will then act on the letter, if of course it is a common issue. The president then brings it up to council and gets all the branches involved on making an amendment, a new law, etc. That is their role, to make the final decisions and tweaks. Overall the people and government have just as much power as the other. Without the people, the government wouldn't be able to be informed on the issues going on in the country. Without the government, us people would be very disorganized. We would not be able to tell our concerns and issues, we would have to deal with it ourselves. The reason us people aren't able to deal with the laws is due to our country being so large. In conclusion, the people's power helps the government help the people and the government's power helps the people.
