Simplify 3x + 6x 2 - 5x - x 2. 6x 2 + 2x 6x 2 - 2x 5x 2 - 2x 5x 2 + 2x

OpenStudy (marigirl):

can u clarify \[3x+6x ^{2}-5x-x ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya @marigirl

OpenStudy (marigirl):

ok would u be able to tell me in that expression, which terms have the same variable... i.e. which terms have the 'same looking' x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (marigirl):

let me write in this way. i just moved the -5x \[3x-5x+6x ^{2}-x ^{2}\] can u see that 3x and -5x both have 1 x where as the next two have \[x ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (marigirl):

what this means is that we can only add or minus numbers with x's that Look the same.... that means we can go 3x-5x to get an answer which is -2x.... are u with me? then we can go \[6x ^{2}-x^2\] to get \[5x ^{2}\]

OpenStudy (marigirl):

what we did now is collect like variables, i,e add or subtract terms in which the x looks the SAME.. so ur final ans is \[5x ^{2}-2x\]
