Find the value or r so the line that passes through the pair of points below has the given slope. (5 , r), (4 , 9), m = 1 r=

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Suggest you dig up and use the formula for the slope of a straight line. Are you familiar with it? Once you have that formula in front of you, just plug in the given coordinates of the two points and equate the result (the slope of the line) equal to 1 (also the slope of the line). then you'll be able to solve for r.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

AB?

OpenStudy (lucaz):

mathmale already told you how to solve it

OpenStudy (lucaz):

so just use the formula

OpenStudy (mathmale):

\[m=\frac{ y _{2-y _{1}} }{ x _{2}-x _{1} }\] is the formula for the slope of a straight line passing through the points (x1, y1) and (x2,y2). We just HAVE TO know this formula; I'd suggest you make up a reference list of formulas, concepts, etc. and review it often. Given those 2 points, what is the slope of the line through them both?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Suppose the 1st point is (5,r). Then \[x _{1}=5;y _{1}=r\] Write a similar sentence for the 2nd point.
