what is the simplest form? sqrt 2 + sqrt 5 / sqrt 2 - sqrt 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's as simple as you can get. Anything else is like -(2*sqrt(10) ------------ - (7/3) 3

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Hi, __/2 + __/5 (/) __/2 - __/5 Just as with "regular" numbers, square roots can be added together. But you might not be able to simplify the addition all the way down to one number. Just as "you can't add apples and oranges", so also you cannot combine "unlike" radicals. To add radical terms together, they have to have the same radical part. All of these have an understood "1" in front of their roots. Can you do it from here?

thanks for clearing it up!
