Find the value of y to the nearest whole number. 177 197 239 396

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what the laws of cosine and sine are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i do not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. do you have anything specific you are supposed to use to solve this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so i'm going to use the law of sines just because it is actually pretty simple. it says that for the sides of a triangle a, b, and c with corresponding angles A, B, and C a/sinA=b/sinB=c/sinC. does that make a little bit of sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kinda

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok since we know the angle Y is 48 degrees y/sin(48)=265/sin(90). then you just have to solve it for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y/sin(48)=265/sin(90) ysin(90)=265sin(48) y=265sin(48) y=197

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did that make sense? its ok if it didnt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really i mean ill look at it carefully t get a better understanding

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah im trying to find an easier way to do it. give me a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright take ur time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have your math textbook on hand by any chance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what book is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it just has geometry on the cover ;[

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no pictures or anything? no publisher?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sourwing do you know how to do this without using law of sines?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why would you want to use law of sine when it's already a right triangle? Just use definition of sine and cosine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you mean like sine=adjacent/hypotenuse? there are two variables though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sin(theta) = opp/hyp sin(42) = x/265 cos(42) = y/265 just solve for x and y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah sorry. ok so we would need to know sin(42) and cos(42). @cutecupcake how much work do you need to show? could you just say cos(42)=197=y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just use a calculator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i dont need to explain why or anything but id like to know you now :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 197?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay gotcha
