what polynomial has roots of -4, -1, and 6

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I would rephrase the question a little differently. "what is the function that has roots of -4 -1 and 6 ?"

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you can write those roots as (x+4) (x+1) and (x-6) and we know that the function can be factored to it's roots, so lets work this backwards, Expand (x+4)(x+1)(x-6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK...And what should I do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FOIL (x+4)(x+1)(x-6) out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okk

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

when you get the answer, tell us what you got, to make sure it's right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait is it x * x and 4 *1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, Outside, Inside, Last. Multiply them out in that order.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll do an example for you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+1)(x+2) Multiply x*x, add x*2 because of the plus sign between them (x and +2.) Then do 1*x and add 1*2 (1 and the +2). You'd get x^2+2x+x+2 Simplify this and you'd get x^2+3x+2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k i got x^2+5x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok the answer is x^3-x^2-26x-24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got the same thing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whoohoo!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help with another

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@halorazer

OpenStudy (anonymous):
