They were making a religious journey. Plymouth was the area of England where they had lived. They believed they were destined for success. Several of the families were named Pilgrim.
A pilgrim, at least by one definition of the term, is someone who makes a journey for a reason considered sacred to them. The Puritans, to be sure, were fleeing religious persecution in England.
