How did the Holocaust move from boycotting businesses to genocide?

The short explanation is that how hate starts -- first with talk demeaning a person or a race, and then escalating into genocide if it isn't opposed. And in Nazi Germany's case, not enough people stood up to keep it from spilling over into genocide. They were turned into scapegoats for the ills of Germany and enough people went along with it to condemn the Jews. It started first with boycotts, book burnings, public speeches blaming the Jews, and many Jews felt that it would actually pass. But it didn't, especially after Hitler gained control of the government and made the Nazis the only political party with power. As the Nazis continued to consolidate power, they grew bolder. The Nuremburg Laws essentially turned the Jews into non-persons in Germany, severely curtailing their rights. After that, it became a matter of bureaucratic "resettlement" to move the Jews into ghettos and concentration camps. With the Nazis in control of the state, they could do anything that they wanted at that point especially during the war.
