What is the difference between irony and hypocrisy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. 3 types of irony: Dramatic: When the audience/reader knows something that the character does not. (For example, in Romeo and Juliet, romeo thinks that Juliet is dead while the audience knows she is not.) Verbal irony: When you say something but mean another thing, often used with sarcasm . Situation: When something happens opposite to it's intended purpose/role. (For example a man getting hit by an ambulance) Hypocrisy is when someone tells someone not do so something, but continues to do the same thing that they just said not to do. (For example a man telling you not to smoke while he takes a drag from a ciggarette) People who do things like this are known as hypocrites.

Thank you so much! How about in the Catcher in the Rye, when Holden says he hates religion and God, but later mentions how he admires Jesus, would that be irony or hypocrisy?

I wouldn't say that hating God would be hypocrisy if you admired Jesus because Jesus was a man said to have done many good deeds. I would say it is ironic because Jesus is a huge religious figure for Christians, which of course is a religion, which he previously stated that he hated. It would be like saying "I hate OpenStudy but I admire NicolasCage420 for helping me out." I may represent OpenStudy but I am not OpenStudy itself. Please note that many Christians call God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit the same thing (The Holy Trinity). In their opinion they may see it as hypocritical because they see Jesus as the same "being" as God, so to them saying that someone hates Jesus is equivalent to hating God. Of course, not everyone believes in the same God, Religion, or whatever else. I myself as a non-believer say it would be fair to admire Jesus for good things he's done (whether you believe he did it or not) like feeding the poor, helping the sick, etc.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! And yes, I'd say Jesus did some pretty amazing things, so I agree that it would make sense to admire him regardless of religious affiliations and/or beliefs :) Thanks again!
