Could someone explain something to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is your question?

OpenStudy (icalibear):

Why is (3x + 8)(2x + 6) simplified down to 6x^2 + 34 + 48? Like where did they get the 34

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply term-by-term and add them together (3x + 8)(2 x + 6) = 6 x^2 +18x + 16x + 48 Started with 3x and multiplied the other two then used 8 and multiplied the other two then added together what I had gotten.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should be \(34x\) not \(34\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. 34x

OpenStudy (icalibear):

okay, so following that if i were to simplify (a + 6)(a+ 3) the answer would be a^2 + 9a + 18??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right!

OpenStudy (icalibear):

Well I have one more that I cannot get and that is (x^2 + xy + y^2)(x-y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If this is a multiplication, start with x and multiply all those in the group on the left, then use -y and multiply that group again, term by term, then add together all the products you formed that way.

OpenStudy (icalibear):

if i have y(y^2) does it become y^3

OpenStudy (icalibear):

or y^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y(y^2) = y^3 the exponents add

OpenStudy (icalibear):

okay

OpenStudy (icalibear):

I came up with x^8y^9
