FIND X

zepdrix (zepdrix):

x is an angle. The side `opposite` angle x is the one with measure 5. The side `adjacent` to angle x is the one of length 8. Hmmm, can you think of which trig function relates our Opposite and Adjacent sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zepdrix tangent i think

zepdrix (zepdrix):

\[\Large\bf\sf \tan x\quad=\quad \frac{opposite}{adjacent}\quad=\quad \frac{5}{8}\]Ok good! We've got our relationship set up.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

\[\Large\bf\sf \tan\color{orangered}{x}\quad=\quad \color{royalblue}{\frac{5}{8}}\]We'll want to apply the inverse function in order to solve for x. The inverse function will be the same, but with the orange and blue terms `swapped`. \[\Large\bf\sf \tan^{-1}\color{royalblue}{\frac{5}{8}}\quad=\quad \color{orangered}{x}\]

@zepdrix x=32 ???

zepdrix (zepdrix):

And is your answer that you got in degrees or radians?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Since we're using the `inverse` function, it doesn't matter whether we're in degrees or radians. We'd prefer to be in degrees though. I just wanna make sure you know which mode you're in. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zepdrix ok but is the answer right?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

32 is correct if you meant degrees... You didn't specify if it was degrees or radians. That's what I was asking you...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@zepdrix oh yeah its degrees
