It's easier to find the area of triangles and rectangles. Let's make some cuts like this perhaps:

zepdrix (zepdrix):

These shapes might be easier to work with, yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So ummm start with the big rectangle pieces. Can you figure out what it's dimensions are by counting the coordinate grid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

38 square units

zepdrix (zepdrix):

For the rectangle? Hmm it's 6 across the bottom and also a height of 6. Which I think comes out to an area of 36, yes? :U

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Ok , how bout that small triangle on the far right side. Do you remember how to calculate area of a right triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 1/2

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Hmm I'm not sure how you calculated that :U Doesn't seem quite right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the work for this? I have no idea how to do any of this

zepdrix (zepdrix):

The little triangle on the right, Area of a triangle is \(\Large\bf\sf A=\frac{1}{2}b\cdot h\) Half of the base times the height. Can you figure out how tall that triangle is? Count the squares :U

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did and i guess i can't count

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im really bad at geometry
