Eighty ounces of Lazy Lawn fertilizer covers 1,250 square feet of lawn. a. How many ounces would be required to cover a 4,000-square-foot lawn? Do not enter units in your answer. b. If Lazy Lawn costs $1.19 for a 32-ounce bag, what is the total cost to fertilize the lawn?

OpenStudy (bibby):

For a. set up a proportion. 80 oz ? oz -------- = -------- 1250 ft^2 ? ft^2

OpenStudy (bibby):

Do you have any idea which numbers fill in the ?'s?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am totally lost understand that the ? would be x I am not sure what you mean by 1250ft^2means

OpenStudy (bibby):

foot squared. It's just another way of writing out "square foot". A square foot is a foot times a foot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (bibby):

80 oz ? oz ------------ = -------- 1250 sq feet ? square feet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do i divide

OpenStudy (bibby):

no it's a proportion. You can cross multiply kinda. Just fill in the numbers first... "How many ounces would be required to cover a 4,000-square-foot lawn?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 50oz then

OpenStudy (bibby):

hold up lemme do the math|dw:1391315767372:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i understand what you mean cross multiply

OpenStudy (bibby):

Cross multiplying isn't really a "thing" but I'm not going to whine about the math behind it. Essentially yeah.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol gotcha

OpenStudy (bibby):

k, b. If Lazy Lawn costs $1.19 for a 32-ounce bag, what is the total cost to fertilize the lawn? To start, how many 32 ounce bags will fill up a lawn that takes 80 ounces?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer to 2nd part would be 304.64

OpenStudy (bibby):

don't think so. The way I see it is, we need EIGHTY ounces. The bags only come in 32, right? 1 bag: 32 (not enough) 2 bags: 64 (not enough) 3 bags: 96 (more than enough)

OpenStudy (bibby):

Actually I can't tell which lawn we're fertilizing

OpenStudy (bibby):

if it's the 4000 foot lawn. we need 1 bag: 32 (not enough) 2 bags: 64 (not enough) 3 bags: 96 (not enough) 4 bags: 128 (not enough) 8 bags: 256 ounces (enough)

OpenStudy (bibby):

Go with 8.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that was confusing me as well i didnt understand which lawn they were asking

OpenStudy (bibby):

I think that's it then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i come up with 8 bag @ 1.19 which would be 9.52 in cost

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is the right answer thank you thank you
