Why is TiCl4 called titanium tetrachloride and Hg2O is called mercury (I) oxide? Shouldn't TiCl4 be called titanium(IV) chloride?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah, thats one of it's names. I don't know why tetrachloride is the iupac name though

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Would it be because titanium can have different oxidation numbers? So noting the number would be the priority? @aaronq

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is perfectly correct to call TiCl4 both names. Similarly, Hg2O can be called mercurous oxide. It is a question of nomenclature but neither is wrong. Both titanium and mercury can have different oxidation states, so in one way or another, it has to be noted.

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

u should call it s titanium(IV) chloride :)
