Interval notation is the use of ( and [ to show an inequality.. You use ( or ) when a number is NOT involved in the inequality You use [ or ] when a number IS included in the inequality... So here...x is less than OR EQUAL TO -2 Well...we know that the x is NOT greater than -2...but it CAN BE -2 ..so since -2 IS included...it gets a ] symbol Now we don't know how far back this goes...we just know x is always less than that -2...all the way back...to - infinity ...now -infinity is not an actual number...it is just back there...we don't included -infinity in an answer definitely...we just say it's there...so this gets a ( symbol Our final interval notation is \[\large (-\infty \lt x \le -2]\] Make sense?
