What does the lac operon in bacteria code for? Lactose Enzymes that break down lactose Enzymes that synthesize lactose

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

breakdown lactose...

Agreed ^ with @shrutipande9 lac Z codes for b-galactosidase, which is an enzyme that cleaves b-galactosides (e.g. lactose). lac Y codes for permease, which is involved in the transport of b-galactosides into the cell. lac A codes for b-galactoside transacetylase, which acetylates b-galactosides. These are all enzymes involved in the breakdown/transport of lactose Source : http://www.mikeblaber.org/oldwine/bch5425/lect16/lect16.htm
