somebody please help me i will become a fan and give you a medal

Harry can rake the leaves in the yard 8 hours faster than his little brother Jimmy can. If they work together, they can complete the job in 3 hours. Using complete sentences, explain each step in figuring out how to determine the time it would take Jimmy to complete this job on his own.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Destinymasha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i'm not sure if I can answer this... :P What do you think @Destinymasha

OpenStudy (destinymasha):

im not too sure , either ;/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry @prettygirlrock0804

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok:( i will keep asking until i find somebody to help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Glizzy_Nedd @sourwing @xylenaxoxo @Mchilds15 @FibonacciChick666 @xTabbiitthhaa @peachesncream @yocurtisyo @Isaiah.Feynman

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so, let's look at this in terms of numbers and variables first

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

we want to set up an eq using both harry and jimmy's time

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

but with only one variable, any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/8=1/x? @FibonacciChick666

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not quite. There are no fractions or multiplication in this one.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so let's say you have $5 your sister has $3 more than you, how many $ does she have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

how did you get 7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

adding 5 and 3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

check your addition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

meant 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pressed the wrong number

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok good now this problem would be the same as saying your sister has $3 more than you, together you have $13. How much money do you have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 dollars

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right??

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yep

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

now how did you slove that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i solved it from first subtracting 3 away from 13 which i ended up with 10 and since its 2 of us i divided 10 by 2 and got 5

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok, that is not quite the right way to do that

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

but it was effective

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well what is the right way to do this

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so, if we know you have say x dollars and your sister has $3 more than you. you can say she has x+3 dollars

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

now, together you have 13 dolars. so you can say x+(x+3)=13 right?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

now, you do the same math as you just told me, but for different reasons

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so can you step by step solve that eq?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yeah now i get it

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so, tell me how you solved that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+(x+8)=3 is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or do i switch the number around

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

would it be a plus 8 or a minus 8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minus

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so what is your new eq?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x+(x-8)=3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yup now solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we would distribute the x first right

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

distribute?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

is this addition or multiplication?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

never mind forget that i said that

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

addition

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

now can you combine any like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the x

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so what does our eq become?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you combine like terms its x^2-8=3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not quite, we want (x+x) ie. 3b+4b=(b+b+b)+(b+b+b+b)=7b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so it would be x+x-8=3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@FibonacciChick666

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yes, but you still need to combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we would combine -8+3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

show me what you mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8+3=-5....isnt -8 and 3 like terms

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not quite, so you have x+x-8=3 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so what do we do to both sides to get just x's on the left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minus x

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

first what is x+x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

is 2+2=2?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

which one is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@FibonacciChick666

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello @FibonacciChick666

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

right so that gives us what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x-8=3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

good now what?
