OpenStudy (cakt07):

Can someone help me with dividing fractions? (Gold medal for help!)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

what ya got ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

to divide fractions, you " flip " what you are dividing by, then just multiply

OpenStudy (cakt07):

\[2/3 \div 100\]

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

example : 2/3 divided by 1/2 = 2/3 * 2/1 = 4/3 3 divided by 1/4 = 3 * 4/1 = 12 ok...your problem... 2/3 divided by 100 = 2/3 * 1/100 = 2/300 which reduces to 1/150 you see how I " flipped " what I was dividing by. Make sure you do not " flip " the other number, because that would be incorrect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i simple process would be to equate it to some unknown number, n. and work some math \[2/3 \div 100=n\] \[2/3=100n\] \[2=300n\] \[2/300=n\]

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Hold on im confused, So 1/100 times 2/3?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes.....2/3 divided by 100 (100 is the same as 100/1) flip what you are dividing by, then multiply 2/3 * 1/100 = 2/300 which reduces to 1/150

OpenStudy (cakt07):

I dont need he answer btw, i just need help understanding how to solve it, so I can get the answer

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Oh so use the KCC rule?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I do not know what the KCC rule is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, neither do i. personally i would just use math to solve it.

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Keep,Chane,Change, meaning, keep the first fraction, change the divide sign to multiplication, and change the other fraction, meaning (Flip it) like recipical

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thats it....

OpenStudy (cakt07):

or Keep it, switch it, flip it rule.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i find it rather odd that people want to make up 100 different 'rules' to work 5 basic math operations.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

keep the first fraction....change division sign to multiplication....flip what you are dividing by...then multiply. Now if you have a mixed number, be sure and change it to an improper fraction

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Lol, ikr, but i guess the reason why is to make it simpler.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, simpler :) they teach FOIL, and then the kids ask how to FOIL something. .. so much for simpler eh

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

lol...thats true

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Oh crud im confused again.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

confused about what ?

OpenStudy (cakt07):

2/3\[\div 100\]

OpenStudy (cakt07):

HOLY MOLY! I just ended up with 50 over 3 xD

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

2/3 divided by 100 keep 2/3....change division sign to multiplication 2/3 x flip what you are dividing by...100 is the same as 100/1...when flipped = 1/100 so 2/3 * 1/100

OpenStudy (cakt07):

OHHHHHHHHH 100 OVER 1 ohhhh! okay becuz i had 1/100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to math it out, simply some number, say n:\[\frac{2/3}{100}=n\] multiply both sides by 100 \[\frac{2}{3}=100n\] multiply both sides by 3 \[2=300n\] divide both sides by 2 \[1=150n\] divide both sides by 150 \[\frac{1}{150}=n\]

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thats another way....do whichever way is easier for you to understand

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Hold on trying to figure it out.

OpenStudy (cakt07):

WAIT WAIT WAIT, then are you supposed to n reduce?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

n is already reduced by the time you get to the end of it ... 1 and 150 have no GCF other than 1

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

example : 1/5 divided by 10....10 is the same as 10/1 1/5 * 1/10 (see how I flipped what I was dividing by) and yes, when you can reduce....reduce look at this one... 1 2/3 divided by 6 (change to improper fraction, and 6 is the same as 6/1) 5/3 * 1/6 = 5/18 understand ?

OpenStudy (cakt07):

WAAHHHHHH NO! >_<!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good luck ;)

OpenStudy (cakt07):

UGH SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND! Okay okay, can you just break it up like First, second, third?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

you pretty much did with that KCC thing

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Instead of sending the WHOLE DANG thing.

OpenStudy (cakt07):

OMG BUT I GOT 2/300!

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

2/3 divided by 100 you understand that 100 is the same as 100/1. Any whole number is that whole number over 1. Do you understand that ?

OpenStudy (cakt07):

yes

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

so we have 2/3 divided by 100/1 keep the 2/3 change the division sign to multiplication " flip " what you are dividing by, so 100/1 becomes 1/100 and now multiply 2/3 * 1/100

OpenStudy (cakt07):

okay hold on

OpenStudy (cakt07):

2/300 is what i got

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

correct, but when it can be reduced, do that. 2/300 reduces to 1/150

OpenStudy (cakt07):

OHHHHHHHHHHH

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Thats what is said, reduce

OpenStudy (cakt07):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (cakt07):

i get it now

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

anytime :)
