Steps: 1 ) Find the common factor for either s or t. 2) Multiply the entire equation by said common factor so either s or t match. 3) This will eliminate one of the variables. 4) Solve for either s or t. 5) Choose one of the equations, plug in your answer for either s or t into that equation. 6) Solve chosen equation. You now should have the answer to both s and t. If any of these steps confuse you just let me know, and I can walk you through it. :)

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

I think I need to be walked through. How do I know what to multiply by?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, sure. For this particular case I am going to use t first, since it is the easiest. Multiply the entire top equation by 2. This will eliminate t since you will have positive 10t and negative 10t. Since this solution is adding, you can do: 10t + -10t (which equals 0.) So now you have a simple equation, combine your s values and regular numbers to get: 4(2) s+ 5s, 9(2)+ 8 = 13s = 26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve for s, then plug your s value into one of the original equations to get t.

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

I still don't understand. maybe i will stop for the day

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It just looks like a quiz or test to me, so I don't want to give you the final product. What is confusing you?

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

I'm a visual not a read and do

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

why did you do 9(2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4s + 5t = 9 (multiply the entire equation by 2) 8s + 10t = 18 5s + -10t = 8 13s = 26 (added problems together) Then solve for s, and plug in s to the original equation of your choice.

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

s=2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. (:

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

now what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Plug 2 into your original equation for s. Choose either equation, it is your choice.

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

4(2)+5t=18? or would I do 4(2)+5t=9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The second equation. The first would be incorrect even if you could use your changed equation because the 5t would change to 10t and the 4 to 8.

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

I don't understand I got 4(2)+5t=9 8+5t=9 now I don't know the next step

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now you use order of operations to solve for t. Keep in mind your goal is to get t alone.

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

Do I subtract 8 from both sides and divide by 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. That will get t alone and you should have your answer. (:

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

so t=1/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, exactly. :D

OpenStudy (vshiroky):

Thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem, just keep in mind with future problems that instead of just multiplying by part of the equation to cancel out a variable, you multiply the entire equation by whatever number (in this case s).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

S, as used first so you would multiply by 2. I hope that made sense, lol...
