Allow for editing of a comment.
That would be really helpful. I hope they can make this happen. I hate when I messup a comment, and then have to start over or post a new comment.
If OS allows for editing a comment, judging the best response might become complicated. One can very easily copy/paste the ideas posted in the comments below & post them as one's own..
Never thought of that ^
yes i agree with @lastdaywork
Also, IDK about other subjects, but for technical one's - a wrong approach is almost as important (if not more) as the correct one. (Atleast for me ;)
Woah, never thought of that before. This would be a great idea, that way people can correct their mistakes more easily then having to type a whole new comment! @Isaiah.Feynman be sure to post this idea in Thomaster's suggestion box. The link is posted below vvvv and once again, thank you for your suggestion! http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/52e0836ee4b0942cc9de3920
A good idea but there are some exploitations for it.
Well, if there was a viewable edit history it would not be too bad.
Hmm yeah
But thats just extra stuff being stored on the servers >.>
If they delete it and post anohter comment it is still the same storage on the server.
Oh
Theres still a major exploitation with this idea. Like I think its a cool idea and all but people could just steal credit of another persons work.
Allow for time to implement :) But it's a great idea! We just need some time to handle the issues we have now.
@LastDayWork I agree with what you're saying, but if the date & time when they edit that question shows up to everywhere , it'll be obvious who wrote the correct answer first. OR Once someone edits their question, their order of the responses can be based on the date. Example: Ja1 posted this at 31 minutes. & shadowlegendx posted his response 5 hours ago. If shadowlegendx edits his right now, his response goes after Ja1 instead But then the editing questions isn't much usable if we do that. ( so I would go with the first suggestion better) Anyways, that's just what I think. And @Isaiah.Feynman you should submit this Great Idea (:
I think its a great idea, I really dislike when i mess up on a comment, then i have to RE-write it
I agree
Just kidding :P Anyways I don't think its a good idea because often time schools look up responses to check if someone has cheated, and the person who wrote the response could change the text to nothing.
Which is where a response history helps.
For mods? That could be useful but it would cause more strain on the server to make individual save files for all the comments. Unless it were to be compressed into a single file, but I can't think of a way for that to then be extracted upon request.
They already keep everything, including deleted ones. I would replace the general user delete with an edit and history. It really is no extra load on the database because they already store everything. But it would let people fix mistakes without having to retype everything.
Hmm, well in that case the delete system could be scrapped and reformatted to work for this system.
I would keep delete, just restrict it down to mods and above. Oh, an it would actually make it easier on school cheat checks at that point because anyone could see the old messages unless a mod deleted them.
Well I don't know how the server is coded but we could simply leave the fragments that give mods universal delete privileges and take that function away from users and use whatever is already coded elsewhere and embedded to make a rewrite system. Regardless though, It would take a bit of re-working of the server code.
Actually, all it would take on the server side is one more flag on the message. If it is the main one or a prior edit. Everything else would be in how it is retrieved and presented.
True, I think it boils down to how the system is already built, from here we can only speculate unfortunately.
Good idea @e.mccormick
Thanks all for your commentaries.
If OS do provide an edit feature, there would be two possible criterion for ordering the posts - 1) By the time of making last edit Which is same as deleting the previous post and use copy/paste option while making a new one. Of-course equation's can't be copied, but if we can (somehow) see the un-rendered text (at will) we can copy equations and diagrams too.. 2) By the time of creating a post Even by providing the time of last edit and/or an edit history..it will still give an 'undue' advantage to the one (intentionally/unintentionally) committing plagiarism. So, I am still 'against' the edit feature..
Also, I think providing a feature to toggle LaTeX (as I could when LaTeX wasn't working ; & we were using Opcode's greasemonkey script) would be much easier than providing an edit tool (along with edit history). But that's for the expert's to decide..
