How many solutions exist for the following system of equations? -4x – 6y = -28 2x + 3y = 14

OpenStudy (aykayyy):

one, because they are the same equation. the first on is just the second on times (-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so all ordered pairs (x,y) satisfies 2x + 3y = 14 are the solutions for example (7,0),(1,4) .......and so on you can find all pairs by yourself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are an infinite number of solutions because those two equations are equivalent - the first equation is the second one multiplied with (-2). (basically the same written in a different manner). In linear algebra we say that the system itself is not "independent". Because it is not an independent system, the only thing you can do is to express y=(14-2x)/2, plot it (which is going to be a line) and point out that a line has an infinite number of points (solutions). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_of_linear_equations
