How is stomach acid neutralized in the small intestine?

OpenStudy (abbie):

@whpalmer4 @Destinymasha @thomaster

thomaster (thomaster):

sodium bicarbonate which is secreted by the duodenum neutralizes gastric acid. \(\large\sf NaHCO_3 + HCl \rightarrow NaCl + H_2O + CO_2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correcto :)

OpenStudy (abbie):

so for an experiment to prove that bicarbonate neutralizes gastric acid what can I do? any ideas? I know I can use baking soda and a PH measurer but can someone tell me it in steps please???

OpenStudy (abbie):

anyone??

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Couldn't you just use baking soda and hydrochloric acid?

OpenStudy (abbie):

I can but what exactly do I do with those

OpenStudy (abbie):

and what is hydrolic acid?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Hydrochloric acid is hydrochloric acid... I guess measure the pH of HCl before, and after, pouring in some baking soda.

OpenStudy (abbie):

so the oh is 1.42 of the hydrolic acid

OpenStudy (abbie):

then I pour in the baking soda and measure the ph again?

OpenStudy (abbie):

@agent0smith

OpenStudy (abbie):

ok I did that now i dont know how to measure it

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Idk, you can use litmus paper...

thomaster (thomaster):

either measure the pH with some electrodes (a pH probe) or with indicator paper. You could also do it colorimetric.
