What do you need help on?
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
I need to put this equation into the quadratic formula and dont know how to
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
\[x(x-5)=-4\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yeah. I don't know how to do those sorry :(
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
its okay :)

Just multiply the x into both terms, subtract the 4 from the other side so the whole thing equals 0.
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
huh?
OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):
x(x-5) --> You have to multiply x times x, then x times -5. You're distributing the x to that term (x-5). What would that be?
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
\[x^2 -5x =-4\]
OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):
Right! Now add 4 to both sides to get rid of the -4 on the right side. It'll now be equal to 0.

\[x^2-1x =0\]
OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):
Incorrect, you're just adding the 4 to both sides, you're not doing anything to the x^2 -5x
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
oh
OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):
Because the number 4 is not like x^2 or -5x
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
\[x^2 -5x +4\]

Right
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
so when i put it into the quadratic formula it look like this
\[\frac{ -5\pm \sqrt{-5^2 - 4 *1*4} }{ 2*1 }\]
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
right?
OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):
Oh lol. The very first term is -b, which would be 5 instead of -5.
OpenStudy (snowcrystal):
oh okay
