Ambassadors Training Session 1
Training session video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x-sT8eZo6o Notes attached.
Also, if you have any feedback on the video, let me know. My production skills are basic and my goal is to get the point across. Be sure to answer the question at the end within the next two weeks. I will have another video up soon, but I want to give some excess time for answering questions.
Oh, and if you know Star Wars, there will be a few jokes in there for you to get. If you are an Evil Overlord, Trusted Lieutenant, or Minion, there are a few other jokes for you to get.
@e.mccormick - The video was very good and it included some of the basics of OpenStudy. And surely, the assignment will be done soon. Though, I didn't expect that the video will be short , I thought it would be of at least 30 + minutes :) Anyway, it was very nice and loved the notes as it contained the transcript . I have some questions and will ask you where they should be .
Well, the main concepts are in the Code, Terms, and Privacy Policy. Going over every detail of those in the video would make it longer, but I do not think it is needed.
Yeah, sure, it was the basics of OS and those are very well mentioned in the CoC and TaC pages of OS. It was perfect as per the start of the training.
TaC says "In addition, you agree not to use the Service or the Site to: register for more than one User account, register for a User account on behalf of an individual other than yourself, or register for a User account on behalf of any group or entity" It has been discussed before that if one would like to change one's username, then they may make themselves a new account. Was that simply a known thing that was not added to the TaC? In the CoC in regards to this, it only states that multiple accounts may not be used to "inflate your status in any way"...?
In the TaC section: "By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant [...] rights associated with your User Content." it says that by posting User Content you grant the site an irrevocable licence to use, copy... that content, but then again it says that if you remove such content that licence expires. Seems kinda contradictory to me.
@e.mccormick , the PDF file you linked is broken for me. I've discussed these two documents so many times with ShadowFiend that they're molded into the eyelids. I'll make sure to post my assignment when I get off work today. This is a very good video for our new Ambassadors. Believe it or not, a lot of people haven't read the Terms and Conditions.
The PDF won't load in my browser directly, for some reason. However you can right-click the link and select save link, that way you can download the PDF and open it manually.
Haha, Mccormick, you got these ripping apart the Code of Conduct and Terms and Service. (: @jigglypuff314 To answer your question about inflating merits. You cannot create multiple accounts for the sake of giving yourself, or any third party a medal. While it may be true that the Terms and Service prohibit the creation of more than one account, this isn't always true. If you read the opening paragraph in the Terms and Service, you'll see that all content posted on OpenStudy, with its name and symbol (trademark), all belong to Inquus Corp (we). Therefore, if an administrator of the board signifies that you can perform a certain action given specific conditions, or subjects the rules to change, then they can. It is also OpenStudy's decision if they want to enforce any parts of the Code of Conduct. Most action will go unwarranted. These two documents are for legal purposes and are subject to delegation. @math&ing001 Any and all content can be used by Inquus if posted on OpenStudy. However, this is subject to the staff's discretion. User-Generated Content, such as that which violates domestic or international law, will be removed and the user will be held responsible, unless otherwise Inquus claims rights.
``` All educational content on the Site, including but not limited to Blogs, Textual Annotations, postings on StudyPads, Questions and Answers and status posts, and other User Content legally posted on the Site is available based on the terms and conditions of the Company's Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Copyright. ``` What is a StudyPad? It's not a native feature of the site.
The PDF won't open for me. :/ @e.mccormick
@Lena772 Click on the link and save it by right-clicking. But the PDF doesn't add anything to the video.
"If you create new accounts to bypass a suspension, you will be permanently banned from the site. No questions asked." Is the person's IP blocked from accessing the OS website in this case?
@Lena772 , The person's account will be suspended permanently. IP Suspensions have proved to be somewhat troublesome. They require Administrator privileges. However, because of Dynamic IPs, this can be frustrating.
Thanks @Compassionate
In the rules it states, "Don't devalue the question/answer process! Don't provide someone with just the answer - explain the process, and help guide them through understanding the problem." Which I tend to interpret as simply do not give out answers without a valid explanation. I see frequently at times people just post the answer or the entire process. First, of all that is quite annoying to read and then people argue about it. So, I want to know am I misinterpreting what that says? Plus the rules also state, "Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution." We should allow for an attempt to be made or at least for the individual to let you know if they have done so. Especially when it comes to math trial and error is a key factor in a person's own understanding. We guide by a step by step solution and explaining to the user. Checking for verification... I think you can easily tell if the person has a good understanding is by checking to see if they keep asking about the same concept or not. I am not saying that people will understand by asking one question. I know I tend to have a lot when it comes to math because I do truly want to understand. Hopefully, I have a clear understanding of that rule. TAC... What does this exactly mean, "User Disputes You are solely responsible for your interactions with other OpenStudy Users. We reserve the right, but have no obligation, to monitor disputes between you and other Users." I understand the first sentence. Which is obviously pretty straight forward. The second on the other hand... is it saying that you do not have to intervene if a dispute is seen between users? I am not so sure about this one. Some clarification would be nice. I have no other comments on any other rules or TAC.
Well, change of plans... I see that in the section of "Termination" in the TAC... it says accounts can be in fact deleted. So what is the big problem with deleting someone's account who in fact wants the account that belongs to them deleted? Why ban the person instead? Well, I always see the response as to keep the person's information on the site. To keep their questions or answers or what ever. However, is it really necessary to do this? Why can't someone else just ask the question? I mean the option to delete someone's account is there... so why not use it? Or when is this used if ever?
I don’t mean to be critical but for the sake of this exercise I decided to really piece apart the CoC and express any fault(s) and/or issues. “Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution.” – Though much discussion has arisen from this statement, I think it’s imperative we focus on the keyword “answers” here. Many times I see people post how they got the answer, some even are our oldest users (99’ers) and I believe that a mutual agreement needs to be made on whether or not this is valid because if we really take it into consideration, we are here to help the user learn and by giving them the answer we limit their ability to learn. See also: “Don't provide someone with just the answer - explain the process, and help guide them through understanding the problem.” “Posting questions that are not, in fact, questions (for example, starting a question in the Mathematics group to wish someone "Happy Birthday").” – Does this pertain to the feedback section? If so we have an issue on our hands…. “Soliciting personal, private, or offline contact information.” – Soliciting means to request information from someone, therefore I could easily send someone my address and “technically” as long as they do not find that creepy then I wouldn’t really be violating any terms correct? “Membership in the Service is void where prohibited. This Site is intended solely for Users who are thirteen (13) years of age or older. Any registration by, use of or access to the Site by anyone under 13 is unauthorized, unlicensed and in violation of these Terms of Use. By using the Service or the Site, you represent and warrant that you are 13 or older and that you agree to and to abide by all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement.” – Not a question, just a statement: We need to crack down on this or make the site available to those under 13 in accordance with COPPA. “any instance of outside citation, summary, or reproduction of academic content….” – This goes along with the “Do not copy and paste” in the CoC, basically we are told not to coy things from other sources but instead to type them (i.e. I type out a problem on my homework sheet), but this basically limits all online students… so In this case we need to make it clear that if your problem on FLVS is “find the value of X in the following triangle” then the user should instead ask “how do you find x in a triangle?” and draw a picture of it (technically you can’t claim copyright of a triangle that is drawn by someone else and is different in design) “impersonate any person or entity, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent yourself, your age or your affiliation with any person or entity;” – come on now….. do we really take this seriously currently? “solicit personal information from anyone under 18” – yet it was stated that we cannot solicit any information at all, a bit of clarification would be necessary here. There was more, but I didn't want to spam this :P
@MathLegend Probably an error of terms. To answer your question look at my beautiful drawing: |dw:1395091605328:dw| but then:|dw:1395091751320:dw|
