yeah i get it when i get two numbers to work with but this is so confusing ;(
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay try not to complicate things. Break it into smaller pieces
OpenStudy (anonymous):
this pic is made up of 2 of the same triangle and a square
OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes use that to calculate area of triangle BDC
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
nope
OpenStudy (anonymous):
remember area of triangle= \[\frac{ 1 }{ 2 } \times base \times height\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
your base is 2 and height is 4 so area for 1 triangle is 4

if you are saying 8 because there is 2 triangle then yes the area is 8
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so is 2*4=8 1/2= 4 right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes that is 1 triangle, but do you see you have another triangle which is exactly the same
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yeah
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so multiply your 4 by 2

8
OpenStudy (anonymous):

basically your base is 4 and height is 4
OpenStudy (anonymous):
16
OpenStudy (anonymous):
area of square = 16
area of both triangle = 8
add up both area = area of the whole thing = 16+8 = 24
