Can Someone Explain how I Would do This.? i Just Don't Want the Answer, i Want To Understand it, if so Thank You <3 ^-^ Solve the inequality 2x + 8 < 5x - 4.

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Put all terms with x to the left hand side and terms that don't to the right hand side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont get that?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

That means put "5x" to the left hand side and "+8" to the right hand side

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Because you group terms containing "x" together and terms that don't together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 2x+5x < -4 +8 ?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Not quite

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Sorry for misleading you, but when I say "put" I didn't just mean literally put it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

/.\ ughhh

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Okay let's put it this way

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Subtract both sides by 5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i subtract5x from 2x or 8?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

From 2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so nows its 7+8<-4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You do letters to the left numbers to the right. You should get 2x-5x < -8-4

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Don't leave out the x

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

And 2-5 is not 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x +8 <-4 Sorry i typed the wrong thing in my calculator

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Yep, now subtract 8 from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x<-12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i divide now?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Wonderful

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Yep, but bear in mind that you have to change the sign when dividing by a negative number

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

That means if it was bigger than, it becomes lesser than, and vice versa

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean change the sign? like < to > ?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is x>4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There you go

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank You Both (: i Aprreciate it ^-^ <3

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

No problem :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anytime (: Glad I could help
