Algebra 1B Question on Absolute value Equations, I kinda need help on this and I don't fully understand it. |y+4|<1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you have something like |x| < k, where k is some positive number, then it turns into -k < x < k

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So that means |y+4|<1 turns into -1 < y+4 < 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Subtract 4 from all sides to isolate y

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Doing that gives you: -1 < y+4 < 1 -1-4 < y+4-4 < 1-4 -5 < y + 0 < -3 -5 < y < -3 ... which means y is between -5 and -3 (not including either endpoint)

Wow ok that makes more sense now thankyou!

you're welcome
