Which senator led a witch hunt for communists in the United States during the 1950s that destroyed the lives of many innocent people? A. Joseph McCarthy B. Margaret Chase Smith C. Ralph Flanders D. Robert La Follette

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That'd be (A) McCarthy. The guy loved the limelight in going after what he saw as communists everywhere in the second Red Scare.

Which statement about civil rights leader Thurgood Marshall is correct? A. He organized the boycott that led to integration of public transportation in Montgomery, Alabama. B. He was the first African American to be appointed a justice of the Supreme Court. C. He was an outspoken militant who did not always agree that nonviolence was the best means of protest. D. He wrote an open letter from the Birmingham jail explaining why he was working for the cause of social justice.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd say (B). He was definitely the first African American to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Which Vietnamese nationalist asked President Truman for U.S. help in winning his country's independence from France? A. Chiang Kai-Shek B. Kim Il Sung C. Ho Chi Minh D. Mao Zedong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's right! It's definitely (C). Chiang Kai-Sheck and Mao Zedong were both in China and Kim Il Sung was North Korea's leader.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Who broke the color barrier in baseball in 1948 by being the first African American to play in the major leagues? A. Branch Rickey B. Jackie Robinson C. Satchel Paige D. Buck Leonard

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the hint is Affrican American

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got it. It's definitely (B). There's even a movie out that talks about his story called "42" starring Harrison Ford as his club manager.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why did President Eisenhower send federal troops to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957? A. to enforce court-ordered integration of the city's public high school B. to break a boycott of public transportation by the city's black residents C. to protect striking black garbage workers from police brutality D. to support Governor Orval Faubus in his efforts to uphold Jim Crow laws

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isnt this one A? they also made a movie about ruby bridges about this too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd go with (A). That's the main reason he sent the troops in because there was a lot of local resistance to the idea of desegregation in the South.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good job!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 more left

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one is ez, i bet its A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which civil rights leader preached nonviolence and used nonviolent means to fight racial injustice in the United States? A. Martin Luther King, Jr. B. Huey Newton C. Bobby Seale D. John Lewis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You would win that bet. It's definitely (A). He promoted non-violent marches and protests as a means to drawing attention to civil rights issues and push forward change.

Which statement about a capitalist economic system is true? A. In a capitalist economy, the government owns the means of production. B. In capitalist societies, people are not motivated to work hard since it will not affect their income or profits. C. The capitalist system encourages competition among businesses. D. Capitalism requires that all citizens be government employees, no matter what kind of work they do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd go with (C), that it encourages competition. You can see that for yourself in your local community with all of the businesses around that are trying to earn your money. All of the other answers are more true of dictatorships or planned economies.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which does not describe a way that a boycott can be a powerful agent for change? A. It is non-threatening because it rejects violence. B. It can have a serious economic impact on businesses. C. It demonstrates the power of the judicial system. D. It shows that many people support the cause.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its either D or A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd actually go with (C). The only reason I would is because the judicial system doesn't have to be involved as long as no laws are broken -- a boycott and involve many people, be non-violent, and impact a business. It's like ignoring a company's products because you don't like something about them or how they do business. It hurts no one, only their bottom line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im leaning twards D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which statement about American society in the 1950s is correct? A. Many middle class suburban women were unhappy with their circumstances. B. Most Americans of the 1950s lived on farms. C. Most suburban neighborhoods had a lot of racial and ethnic diversity. D. Most people in suburbia could not afford cars.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after this question we will see what score we got :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isnt it D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This last one is tricky. I'm not sure which one is right, but I'm leaning towards (D) or (A).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now that I think about it, I'd probably lean more towards (A). During WW2, women were allowed into more working roles than they had before the war started which opened a lot of doors. Unfortunately, when the war was over, societal pressures tried to shift them back into being "happy homemakers" which was frustrating for many who saw the opportunities they had from before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Final Score: 68%, Not Passing 15/22 correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry I couldn't help with the other ones. :(
