(I'm a bit rusty on this, but since you're in the history forum this might be the only help you'll get :c) The first quartile is the bottom half, right? Let's look at these numbers. There are 8. Let's first put them in the correct order. 40, 45, 48, 51, 59, 62, 69, 74. Now we can split them into three groups. 40, 45, 48 for the first group. 51, 59 for second and 62, 69 and 74 for the third. Each group is a quartile. So, the first third of your numbers (lowest to greatest) is your first quartile. I hope that this helps, I apologize if this wasn't a very clear explanation!!
