Describe the domestic policies of President Truman and President Eisenhower during the postwar period. President Truman faced high inflation and labor unrest in the immediate postwar period. Truman worked to resolve disputes between labor unions and employers, and he fought the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act restricting labor union rights despite a wave of strikes across the nation. Truman also actively worked for civil rights reforms but succeeded only in desegregating the military through an executive order. During his 1948 reelection campaign, Truman criticized Congress as one of the worst in history and managed to drum up enough grassroots support to win. Truman then tried to push through a number of Fair Deal reforms, meant to strengthen and extend existing New Deal programs, but Congress rejected his efforts. Although President Eisenhower won the 1952 election as a Republican, he continued many of the New Deal programs already in existence. He opposed big government but started several large new federal programs, including the construction of an interstate highway system and a federal funding program to train more scientists
