Simplify.

OpenStudy (abbles):

Okay, first you need to find common denominators to subtract/add the fractions on both the top and the bottom.. Find a common denominator between 36 and x^2 (the denominators of the fractions on top) and similarly do the same for 6 and x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The choices are

OpenStudy (anonymous):

common denominator is 6 @abbles

OpenStudy (abbles):

Not quite... first, the common denominator of 36 and x^2 is 36x^2 and the common denominator of the bottom fractions is 6x. Have you worked with common denominators like this before?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abbles no

OpenStudy (abbles):

We'll work on the top two fractions first. Since the common denominator is 36x^2, you will need to make the denominators of both fractions equal to 36x^2. You can do that by multiplying. The first fraction is 1/36 and the second is 1/x^2, so do you know how to get both denominators to equal 36x^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abbles no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abbles never done this before

OpenStudy (abbles):

So you would need to multiply both fractions to get common denominators. First, 1/36 you can multiply this whole fraction by x^2. Make sure you multiply that by the numerator and the denominator. Once that is done it should be x^2/36x^2. Then do the same for the second fraction and it should look like 36/36^2. Are you following?

OpenStudy (abbles):

You can now subtract the two fractions because they have a common denominator. It would be (x^2 - 36)/36x^2. We'll leave this for now and continue on to the bottom two fractions using the same technique.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok @Abbles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/36 x^2(x^2-36)

OpenStudy (abbles):

For the bottom two fractions, find the common denominator by multiplying by 6x. 1/6 would become x/6x and 1/x would become 6/6x. Those added together are 6x/6x which can be simplified to 1, which is irrelevant in this case since dividing anything by 1 equals itself.

OpenStudy (abbles):

Hold on for a sec, I'll check your answer.

OpenStudy (abbles):

Remember we simplified the top to equal x^2 - 36? Well you can reverse FOIL that to make it (x - 6)(x+6). And I made a mistake on the second set of fractions, they don't cancel out to 1. Instead, they equal 6 + x/6x. Now we can set up the final problem and simplify.

OpenStudy (abbles):

I don't think you got the right answer.. how did you come to that?

OpenStudy (abbles):

You should get something that looks like this: (x-6)(x+6)/36x^2/(6+x)/6x... now you need to simplify this. Start by canceling out the 36x^2 and 6x and the x+6 and x+6. Since the two x+6 cancel out, that leaves 36^2 divided by 6x equals 6x.

OpenStudy (abbles):

The answer is x-6/6x

OpenStudy (abbles):

Do you understand how I got that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @Abbles i was trying to review it help with more problem?

OpenStudy (abbles):

sure
