what is the first part ?

OpenStudy (phi):

when you have 3(x+2) that means 3 times "stuff inside the parens" if you think of parens as a "package" with stuff inside it, then imagine it is 3 packages. You will have 3 of each thing inside the package.

OpenStudy (phi):

like if you had 3 purses, and each purse had an "x" and a "2" inside it. you would have 3x's and 3 2's in other words, we can re-write 3(x+2) as 3x + 3*2 or 3x + 6 (they call that the distributive law...) so your problem is the same as 3x + 6 > x

OpenStudy (phi):

I would add -x to both sides then add -6 to both sides.

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (phi):

so far, so good. now add -x to both sides

OpenStudy (phi):

after you add -x to both sides you get 3x - x > x - 6 -x on the left side you have 3 x's take away 1 x. How many x's do you have ? on the right side you have 1 x take away 1 x. How many x's do you have ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x can equal anything higher -1
