A student solved this problem by working backwards. Joani has some stuffed animals. She has 2 times as many as Lily. Lily has 6 stuffed animals. Joanie gave 2 away and bought 4 more. How many stuffed animals does Joani have now? Students's solution: Lily has 6 stuffed animals, so Joani had 6 × 2 to begin with. So Joani had 12 stuffed animals. She gave away 2, so 12 – 2 = 10. She bought 4, so 10 + 4 = 14. So Joani has 14 stuffed animals. Here is another problem that can also be solved by working backwards. Wyatt has 3 times as many baseballs as golf balls. He has 5 fewer tennis balls than baseballs. Wyatt has 4 golf balls. How many tennis balls does Wyatt have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, if Lily has 6 stuffed animals and Joani has twice as many, how many does Joani have? Let's start with that. \[6*2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Apologies, I was solving the wrong problem. That one was an example. Let's look at the baseball problem. Wyatt has 3 times as many baseballs as golf balls. \[b=3g\] (where b=baseballs and g=golf balls) We know that he has 4 golf balls. Let's plug this in. \[b=3(4)\] How many baseballs does he have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you get that answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why did you subtract 3 from 5? We are trying to find how many baseballs Wyatt has. The formula is up there, you just need to find b :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just give me the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't do that, you must learn :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the anwser to the whole prob. is 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did you figure that out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

worked it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, let's look at \[b=3(4)\] We just need to multiply 3 by 4. That's what the parenthesis means. \[b=12\] Now if t (tennis balls) is 5 less than b, what is t?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7 finally answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, 12-7=5. Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Here's a website with some multiplication games, it might help you :) http://www.multiplication.com/games/all-games

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ik my multiplication

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay :)
