Kobe's points per game 8, 15, 10, 10, 10, 15, 7, 8, 10, 9 Lebron's points per game 1, 3, 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 7, 8, 10 Kobe believes he is a basketball star and so does his friend LeBron. Create a box plot of Kobe’s and LeBron’s points for the last 10 games. I need some help with this!!! Can someone help me work this and a couple other questions out? it would be greatly appreciated!!! And help me understand them more easy! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how box plot works?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what the median is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isnt it what number is in the middle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what 1st and 3rd quartiles are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isnt 1st quartile the lower half of the data and the 3rd quartile is the upper part of the data?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it the other way around?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1st quartile is the median of the lower half of the data, and the 3rd quartile is the median of the upper half.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so i was sort of right but not really? lol :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, the lower half of the data is a set of points, and only one point, the median of it, would be the 1st quartile, I suppose.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so what exactly would i do to get the data for the box plot for the set of numbers i have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like how would i work it out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You get the min, the first quartile, the median, the third quartile and the max

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1396050135394:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i see what you were saying in the comment before you posted the graph can you help me figure those out? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like by explaining to me how we get the answers as we go and work them out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathmale would you maybe be able to help?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let's look at Kobe's points per game: 8, 15, 10, 10, 10, 15, 7, 8, 10, 9 Would you please re-arrange these data in ascending order?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so like from least to greatest right? so it would be 7, 8,8,9, 10,10,10,10,15,15

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Thanks. Now, what is n, the number of data points?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as in how many are there or what do they all add up to?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

how many data points have you? to save time: n=10. OK! If n is even, as 10 is, then we have to take the middle two data points, average them, and call the result the MEDIAN. Here: (10+10)/2 =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10+10/2 = 10

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Right. So now you have your MEDIAN: 10. How do we find Q1? Take the left 5 data points and choose the middle point. That's Q1. What is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have one question what about the other points will we get to them later?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

that's your Q1. Now look at the rightmost 5 data points (the right half of your data set) and identify the data value that's in the middle.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

For the other athlete, you'll do precisely the same thing to construct a box plot for him.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would it be 10?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I 'm not actually checking your work, but that does look correct. Call your latest result Q3. Then identify the smallest data value Then identify the largest data value. Arrange these 5 numbers in ascending order, and then draw your box plot from that data.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

smallest would be 7 and biggest would be 15

OpenStudy (mathmale):

then your 5-number summary is 7 8 10 Q3 15. See whether you agree or not. Can't find your Q3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt my Q3 be 10?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hold

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, I agree with that. Once you have this 5 number summary, how do you graph the box plot? You need to do precisely the same thing with the data for the other player.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure how to graph it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you maybe help me through the process of graphing the box plot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for all your help!!! i got How to plot it!!! :)

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

If you know the starting vale, q1, q3, and the highest value often referred as maximum then you can plot it. The median of the box would be q3-q1, then just draw a straight line across the box

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Many thanks!
