How does Reader Response edify the reader when they scrutinize The Lottery by Shirley Jackson? Furthermore, she uses her expertise by pulling the reader into to believe a certain tradition in the form of it being spine-chilling. The lottery is not what you might be expecting it to be that might affect your emotions toward it. The key point of this lottery is deleterious, because it’s wounding people who lose; but the people who won won’t be suffering from the vulnerabilities of the tradition. The progression is a lot to take in when the government or in this case the mayor thinks they have the upright position to do these type of things to people causing them agony and wretchedness. The proposition that the government isn’t reliable all of the time is a provocative one because it makes the people in the town square pursue the same tradition ever year. In The Lottery, “…It isn’t fair, it isn’t right… they were upon her…” The quote above is foreshadowing Mrs. Hutchinson’s death, but there’s an alternating motive that may cause some indignation. Also in The Lottery, “…pockets full off stones… boys soon followed his example…” The stones are symbolizing part of the hazards of their tradition; and it also is signifying the indication of Mrs. Hutchinson’s bereavement in a heart-rending way. The government has trusting issues when it comes to following a tradition blindly when it happens every year, but there is no changing sequence to it. Reader response of The Lottery has the teaching ability to bring emotion out by using foreshadow to explain how they use stones to murder people every year as their tradition.
