Michelle and Maggie are at baseball practice. Michelle throws a ball into the air and when it drops to a height of 5ft., she hits the ball. The height of the ball is modeled by the graph below where t = time in seconds and h = height of the ball from the ground. Maggie is throwing a ball into the air and catching it. The height of Maggie’s ball is modeled by the function h(t) = –16t2 + 48t + 15.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part 1. Which ball goes higher in the air, the ball that is hit or the ball that is thrown? Use complete sentences and show all work to explain how you determined the height that each ball reaches Part 2. Determine which girl is likely to be standing on a raised platform. Use complete sentences to explain how you determine which girl is on the platform and then determine the height of the platform. Part 3. Which ball is traveling at a faster average rate of change on the way up? Use complete sentences to explain how you determined the interval at which the height of the ball is increasing and the average rate of change.

could you tag any more people? haha please don't mass tag me again

OpenStudy (linda3):

Please no mass tagging thank you!! :)

OpenStudy (realitywillslapyou):

1. Did you try Google....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried everything LOL

OpenStudy (realitywillslapyou):

Hmmm, well what are you "not getting" about this? I might be able to help if I know that....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (realitywillslapyou):

I'm not going to do this for you, but I will help. Just give me about a minute or two... okay?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure I just need to know how I should solve it I really not looking for complete answer

OpenStudy (realitywillslapyou):

-16(4)the two is in t0p ok 2 +48(4)+15 Just multiple this and you will get your answer!! :D

OpenStudy (realitywillslapyou):

I'm not trying to seem vapid, but by the by, your abs look great! Whatever you are doing to get them that way, keep it up!! XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@RealityWillSlapYou how did you get that -16(4) I really didn't get what you have explained me could you be more clear for me on this please please

OpenStudy (realitywillslapyou):

Sometimes Googling parts of a problem or question work better then looking for the whole thing....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I am not sure really how he get that but thanks for your help @RealityWillSlapYou I am looking for some one who could really help me in understanding this clearly :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jordanloveangle Please help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

with what @princesam

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jordanloveangle If you could help me with Part B and Part C atleast guide me on how to do that would be great

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@princesam ill try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jordanloveangle Thanks a lot buddy :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@princesam ur welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

H(t)= -16t^2 + Vt + S (Look at the Y-intercept) H(t)= Current height after it’s thrown T = time V = starting speed S = starting height for part 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jordanloveangle So for Part 2 Starting height will be 0 right? and T = 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@princesam thenx for the medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got one girl h(t) as -16(4) but not sure on other girl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But I think height cannot be in negative terms which I suppose it is falling down if it is in negative terms again am I wrong anywhere?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no ur not wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still need more help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jordanloveangle Would be great if you let me know how to solve that for another girl too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u resend it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@FibonacciChick666 Could you please help?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

no, and i requested not to be tagged

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jordanloveangle There?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk thanx @princesam

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part 2. Determine which girl is likely to be standing on a raised platform. Use complete sentences to explain how you determine which girl is on the platform and then determine the height of the platform. Michelle is on the raised platform. (The formula below will help you to find it out) H(t)= -16t^2 + Vt + S (Look at the Y-intercept) H(t)= Current height after it’s thrown T = time V = starting speed S = starting height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Part 3. Which ball is traveling at a faster average rate of change on the way up? Use complete sentences to explain how you determined the interval at which the height of the ball is increasing and the average rate of change. (Rise over run. Slope) y^2-y^1/ x^2- x^1 (x1,y1) (x2,y2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does this have to do with parabolas or something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Bubbles1204 Yes related closely with parabolas but I guess there is another way too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi I remember you solving this earlier but please I did not get this clearly could you please help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I'm sorry im not good with algebra kind of things, im better with simpler math and English is my best subject, sorry >.<

OpenStudy (phi):

**** Part 2. Determine which girl is likely to be standing on a raised platform. Use complete sentences to explain how you determine which girl is on the platform and then determine the height of the platform. **** You know 2 things: 1) a graph for Michelle 2) an equation for Maggie I would start by asking, "before I toss the ball in the air, how high off the ground is the ball?" Both the graph and the equation are functions of time. What do you think time=0 means? I think t=0 is the time *just at the start of tossing the ball up* So give this a try: what is the height of the ball at t=0 for Michelle (look at the graph) and for Maggie (use the equation, with t=0) The answer you get should be a good clue to the answer.
