Solve the system of equations and express the answer as an ordered pair of the form (x,y) or write NO SOLUTION if applicable: x + 2y = 5 2x - 2y = 4

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Try addition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use the addition method: add the two equations together; when you do, you will see that one of the variables (the y variable) will cancel out, leaving you with the other variable. Solve for that variable. When you find it, substitute the value for x back into either of the ORIGINAL equations and solve for y.

So, 3x=9, then you divide by 3, x=3 but how would I get y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, i missed your y question. when you know that x = 3, substitute it back into one of the original equations: 3 + 2y = 5 or 2(3) - 2y = 4 you will find that y = 1
