Which of the following characteristics do bryophytes share with algae? non–motile gametes and cell wall structure biflagellate motile gametes and life cycle biflagellate gametes and cuticle
It is B. Here is what I found on this question to help explain. Green algae often have two or rarely four similar flagella when flagellate stages exist and green algae have an alternation of generations in diploid 2n -> haploid 1n stages in their life cycle. What algae do not have is a secreted waxy cuticle to resist dessication since their habitat is aquatic. The sperm of mosses is biflagellate and plants retain the alternation of generations in their life cycle they inherited from the ancestral Charophyta (stoneworts). The production of the secreted cuticle was a major adaptive factor in the transition to a terrestrial existence that differentiates Bryophytes from the green algae. All the green algae are grouped in the Chloroplastida that contains the two branches. 1- The Streptophyta super group includes the basal freshwater Charophyta plus the Embryophytes land plants 2 - The Chlorophyta is the sister clade of green algae that includes the marine species.
