What is a gene ? A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes, which are made up of DNA, act as instructions to make molecules called proteins. In humans, genes vary in size from a few hundred DNA bases to more than 2 million bases How many genes does the human body have ? It was originally estimated that the human genome consisted of over 100,000 genes. The newest research indicates that humans are made up of between 30-40,000 genes What can happen is the code or gene for the hemoglobin molecule is mutated or damaged ? The hemoglobin molecule has two parts: an alpha and a beta. Patients with sickle cell disease have a mutation in a gene on chromosome 11 that codes for the beta subunit ofthe hemoglobin protein. As a result, hemoglobin molecules don't form properly, causing red blood cells to be rigid and have a concave shape (like a sickle used to cut wheat). These irregularly shaped cells get stuck in the blood vessels and are unable to transport oxygen effectively, causing pain and damage to the organs. Genes contain instructions for what Genes are the part of DNA that has the instructions for making all the proteins needed for the cell's life. These proteins differ from each gene, depending on its purpose in the strand of DNA :D
