What is the role of an indicator?

OpenStudy (lena772):

pH indicator is a halochromic chemical compound that is added in small amounts to a solution so that the pH (acidity or basicity) of the solution can be determined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An acid-base indicator is a (most of the time: organic) weak acid or a weak base. The undissociated form of the indicator is a different color than the dissociated form. It indicates an approximate pH, the 'dye/acid or base' changes colour at certain pH values. So it tells you when your solution turns more acidic or more alkaline.
