Now you should know how cities, merchants, artisans, and moneychangers changed the European economy in the Middle Ages. Study this painting of a 15th century market town in the Netherlands. Think about how this painting reflects what life was like in the Late Middle Ages.

You will analyze the painting to complete this assessment activity. Your analysis will focus on discovering three parts of the painting that show evidence of change in Late Medieval European society and economy. Concentrate on the interactions between people and try to determine what activity is going on. How does this activity reflect the changes in European society or the economy that happened as guilds developed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Closely study the painting. Consider how it reflects the economic and social changes of the late medieval period in Europe. Identify three distinct features or interactions you see in the painting that relate to what you learned in the lesson. Explain how each feature or interaction represents an economic or social change in Europe during this period. Be thorough in your explanations. Use at least three complete sentences for each one. Each of your three explanations must discuss a unique change reflected in the painting. They should not be the same or significantly similar to each other. Each of your three explanations must use and explain at least one important term or idea from the lesson. Examples include the following: Artisan Merchant Guild Wealth Crusades Money system Division of labor Usury Urbanization Middle class Check your work for completeness, clear organization, grammar, and spelling before submitting to your instructor.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Start with your list of words. Make two columns on a page. The word list down one column. For each word look for some evidence of that thing or idea in the painting. Write down your evidence(s) opposite the word in the second column. For example, for artisan might write shoemaker, weaver, stone cutter (the building), wood worker (the cabinets), tailor (the clothes) Do the same thing for each word in the first list. You will find that many of the things will appear more than once in the second column. For example, shoemaker might appear in merchant, guild and middle class. When you have exhausted what you feel is every possible evidence for each word, your ready to pick your 3 examples. This time start with the second column. Look for the evidence words that appear most often, Circle or highlight with different colors. You may find the shoes or shoemaker appears 7 times or whatever. The 3 that appear the most are the ones you will write about. Start with the most frequent evidence word. Write sentences explaining how it is an example of each of the first column words it's listed by, You may find you write more than the minimum 3 sentences. Next, do the same thing with the second most listed evidence, then the third. * The assignment is a little vague. It first seems you are supposed to write sentences for each and every feature or interaction. By the end of the instructions it looks like the teacher only wants 3. I'm assuming you only need to do 3. Hope this helps you tackle the assignment.

This is what I said and I got 100% The picture shows a traditional medieval market. After the collapse of the Roman Empire there were a number of kingdoms formed throughout Europe. Towns were formed where goods were exchanged by merchants (people supplying merchandise to a particular trade) via bartering (exchange of goods or services) for other goods or services without using money. The picture shows cloth merchants peddling their goods. In this timeframe goods were exchanged through the barter system. People were introduced to Eastern goods such as silks and spices which promoted trade and the building of more roads. The building of more roads enabled trade and benefited the economy.

The picture shows a rug. Back in the medieval times people also known as artisans or craftspeople made their own goods such as rugs. They worked with specific material and often turned their homes into workshops in which others would work to produce the goods. This collection of people formed guilds which provided structure and support to the members. These people took their goods to the market to sell. The guilds benefited the people socially because they formed groups and teamed up for a common goal. It also economically benefitted the town.

In this picture I see younger people which I assume may be children. In this era it was common for 12 year old boys to take on an apprenticeship to learn a specialization. They would live and work with a craftsmen to master the skill. Once they proved their skillset they would be invited to join a craft guild membership. This allowed them to open up shops and enjoy a higher level of status. The increase in popularity of guilds led to positive changes in the economic system. It paved the path for specialization and a new division of labor.
