explain why a negative iodine test for starch would indicate a positive result for the enzymatic degradation of starch by amylase

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Hello. Welcome to OpenStudy. Well, can you recall what iodine test does? What does it react with? And recall the function of amylase.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that the function of amylase is to break down starch into sugars.

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Right. So if you put starch with amylase, and amylase does it's job, the starch would become sugar, right? So if you test with iodine, what would you see?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm not sure?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Iodine turns reacts with starch to turn purple black. But if there is no starch, there would be no reaction (negative result). So if the starch you have is turned to sugar by amylase, the iodine test will turn out negative.

Oh now i got it ! thank you very much for your help :)

OpenStudy (wolfe8):
