OpenStudy (wolf1728):

A) x+2y=23 B) 6x+3y=98 Multiply equation A by -6 then add to B A) -6x -12y = -138 B) 6x+3y=98 -9y = -40 y = -40 / -9 y = 4.4444444444 Think you can figure out x now ?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

There are two ways for solving linear equations in two unknowns like this, the first method is substitution, and the second method is elimination which is demonstrated above.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Since Wolf has already demonstrated the substitution method, please now try the method of elimination by addition/subtraction. Write out 6x + 3y = 98, as is. Now take the other equation and multiply every term in it by -6. Combine your result with 6x + 3y = 98. (Here, "combine" involves subtraction.)
