What was the Muslim ruler Süleyman known for? A. hiring an army of foreign mercenary soldiers and copying the way of waging war that he saw among the Ottomans B. converting to Christianity and sponsoring artisans and craftsmen in his empire C. building a magnificent monument to his wife and promoting religious tolerance D. ordering a new code of laws for his empire and overseeing construction of a stunning mosque in the capital at Istanbul

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Assuming you mean Suleyman the Magnificent. And not the dozen other famous people named after him. Let's see. He was probably the greatest Ottoman Sultan. So "A" seems rather silly. And converting to Christianity seems equally silly to suggest for a Turkish Sultan. The Taj Mahal in India was built by Shah Jihal a very romantic notion I suppose, but quite a waste of the country's blood and treasure. And which of his wives would he build it for? So, the answer you have left is D. Does that answer seem to fit with a man who held power for over 45 years, totally reformed the empire's administrative system and started a century of expansion with military campaigns? Some times known as Suleyman the law giver. Hope you can select an answer with that background.
