OpenStudy (rock_mit182):

27. Acetic acid can be made by the oxidation of acetaldehyde (CH3CHO). Molecules of acetaldehyde have a UCH3 group, an oxygen atom, and a hydrogen atom attached to a carbon atom. Draw the Lewis diagram for this molecule, give the hybridization of each carbon atom, and describe the p orbitals and the number of electrons that occupy each one. Draw the three-dimensional structure of the molecule, showing all angles.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The -CH3 carbon is \(sp^3\) hybridized with \(109.4^{\circ}\) angles and the C=O carbon has \(sp^2\) hybridization, so it's flat with ~\(120^{\circ}\) angles.
