Please help with these graphs, I do not understand! http://i.imgur.com/YyQ8EUu.png http://i.imgur.com/bdGzv9a.png http://i.imgur.com/duBWGxF.png

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

In the first graph, just state what the x and y values are for each point. So, for point A x=-3 and y=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about the rest of them?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Well there are 3 graphs and the first one requires 6 answers. (I gave you one). Maybe someone else might help you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You gave me less than half of one, could you maybe help me with a simpler question of the three?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Basically, the people ask one question here and not just a whole bunch of them. Also, when people ask a question, they have done at least some amount of work on the problem. For example, for the 1st problem, what did you get for B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did do work on this, there are 5 other questions I didn't include because I did them. I just need to know what to do for these questions, I have tried all day and cannot do them at all.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

That first graph is just a matter of seeing where the points lie on the graph. Do you want to try B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes and C through F, if I could get your help on at least one question I can move along and ask the other two somewhere else.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Okay, what do you get as an answer to B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=4 y=-3 which sounds extremely wrong

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

X does equal 4 but y doesn't = -3 You see that point B lies along the x axis at point 4? that's x. Now look at where point B is in relation to the y axis. Or how high is point B above the x axis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=1?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

That's right!! Just determine precisely where the point lies.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I feel pretty silly now, the graph pretty much has the answers laid out for me. So would C be x=2, y=0?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes that's right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks okay I got question 1 down then, would you still be interested in helping me with question 2?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Well, okay because I gave you a bit of trouble already. But see you learned. Okay on to question 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Okay I'm guessing you don't know about graphing a function correct? ALso do you know anything about absolute value? (That what those 2 vertical bars are.) It's basically asking for you to take a positive value of what is inside. Example | -5| =5 |(3*2)*-1| = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know nothing of graphing a function or absolute value, absolutely nothing.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Wait those nubers are wrong !!! I'll delete those and try again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I deleted them

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Okay we are graphing y=|x-2| X Y -5 7 -4 6 -3 5 -2 4 -1 3 0 2 1 1 2 0 3 1 4 2 5 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y or f(x)= x-2

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

To see how those numbers are generated let's try x=-5 y=|x-2| So if x = -5 then y would equal -5-2 which would be -7 but those vertical bars tell us make that positive so it becomes 7.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait I'm confused which questions do I delete, and which one are we on?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

We are on question 7 and I already deleted my answers so don't worry about that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so how do I graph f(x)= x-2

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

To graph that you need a series of x and y points so it is much easier to think of the function as y = |x-2| We can work out a few of the points. You can look at my answers above. What is y when x=-5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

No - but we can work it out y = |x-2| y = |-5 -2| y = |-7| Finally the vertical bard tells us to make that postivie so when x = -5 then y = 7

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Frank are you doing okay with this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I'm sorry this is really confusing, I know it sounds bad I rather just know the answers. This is really hard for me

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Well I'll tell you what You do have the answers with the numbers I posted above. Now I'll graph it for you. Graph is attached.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I draw this exact thing on a graph for question 2?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes, that is what you do. OR if you download something called OpenOffice it will do it for you. (That's what I used). OpenOffice is VERY similar to Microsoft Office but one big difference - it is free!! (and well worth learning).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My graph doesn't look like that, how do I know where to place the line? The graph you posted y goes up to 7 on mine only 5

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I don't know how you are graphing yours but just graph it from x = -4 to x = +4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://i.imgur.com/hrGpITc.png

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

And use these numbers X Y -4 6 -3 5 -2 4 -1 3 0 2 1 1 2 0 3 1 4 2

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Are you graphing that by hand? It should look a lot like the one I attached a few minutes. If you really want to plot it, use the numbers I just posted.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Remember to plot X and Y correctly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By paint, my assignment is only for adobe so I can't graph anything. What are the exact x and y coordinates for me to draw

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Here are the numbers. You might want to eliminate the first set because it has Y=6. X Y -4 6 -3 5 -2 4 -1 3 0 2 1 1 2 0 3 1 4 2 Remeber to plot these in EXACTLY the same positiions as I did on my graph.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I located a blank graph. Perhaps you could use something like this?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Here's something more like what you need. It is a graph about 5 by 5. (It runs from X -5 to X +5 and Y -5 to Y+5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://i.imgur.com/R6PZ8iw.png

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

That look much better. MAybe you could use a ruler and make it look a lot sharper. (that's up to you.) As I also said you might want to use this graph to draw on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes thank you I will try and do this later offline by hand for a straighter line. Thank you for your help, I'm going to ask my third question now elsewhere you've done more than enough for me thank you :)

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Well I'm working on question 3 right now If nothing else have someone look at it to see if I did it right.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Here's what I have for numbers. Remember I did this very fast so have someone else look it over. X Y -7 17 -6 15 -5 13 -4 11 -3 9 -2 7 -1 5 0 3 1 1 2 -1 3 -3 4 -5 5 -7 6 -9 7 -11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you try drawing it on the graph I posted, it's really hard to figure out where the line should go when all the numbers are placed differently
