Question about IUPAC nomenclature In my book the stem/prefix for a five-carbon chain is given as pent- And the suffix for ketones is given as -anone. However for a five carbon chain, which carbonyl group on the third carbon, i would think it should be pent-3-anone. But wikipedia gives the name of pentan-3-one. Why is this? Looks very inconsistent. Anybody have a reason for this? @abb0t perhaps?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the suffix for a ketone is "-one", not "-anone". it wouldn't work say when you have other functional groups, like alkenes, where the names end in "-enone", like "hexenone".

OpenStudy (aaronq):

As for the formatting, i've always seen it written like your second example; pentan-3-one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what purpose does the -an- part serve then? You could just say pent-3-one

OpenStudy (aaronq):

it's part of "alk\(\color{red}{an}\)e"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Meaning it is a derivative of alkane right? :)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah, it is an alkane derivative. and yes, thats the name of that michael-acceptor structure

Thank you so much :)
