Choose the letter of each of the following that would increase the rate of a reaction. 1.) add heat 2.) decrease the surface area 3.) increase the surface area 4.) reduce heat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heat adds energy to the reaction, less surface area, means more pressure, which also speeds up the reaction. hope this helps ;D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Say you have a lump of a substance and a powdered version of the substance. If you are you react the lump for instance, it takes longer because the surface area is small. For the powdered form of the substance, there is a greater surface area because more of the substance is exposed than in the lump

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Less of the material is exposed for the lump (which has a small surface area)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm... okay... I thought smaller container, more pressure.... but I think your explanation makes more sense :D thanks for correcting me!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm glad i could help. Look at it from a molecular perspective rather than the container being used

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, makes sense! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm better with the actual biological stuff, rather than chemistry-related things :D
