Say you have a lump of a substance and a powdered version of the substance. If you are you react the lump for instance, it takes longer because the surface area is small. For the powdered form of the substance, there is a greater surface area because more of the substance is exposed than in the lump
Less of the material is exposed for the lump (which has a small surface area)
