The text says that lawyers often have to act like historians. How do historians figure out what happened in the past? How could thinking like a historian or help a lawyer do his or her job better? I just can't find a good answer to this.

Back in the day, there were no Pre-Law degrees in college. The History department was usually one of the biggest at most schools because everyone took lots of history to get skills they needed to become lawyers and lots of other things. So, what are those skills. Research skills, writing skills, note taking, let the facts lead to the truth and not prejudge a case, look for patterns, try to understand the human motivations behind events. These aren't just historian skills. Barbara Tuchman was a great historical author. Her back ground was journalism. She said writing history is like writing news but all your sources are dead.
