methyl, or "alkyl group" as the series is called,is essentially a hydrocarbon with general formula C(n) H(2n + 1)... hence methyl would be CH3...it is most commonly used with another group, so as to satisfy the tetravalency of Carbon. 'ol' means an alocohol, i.e., an -OH group is attached to the alkyl group... like methanol would be CH3OH hope it helps! (:
